Description
The European biogas and biomethane market is growing fast. The latest figures show an increase of 37% in biogas capacity across Europe. As this expansion continues, the vital role of biogases in achieving climate targets becomes increasingly clear.
Fully interchangeable with fossil natural gas, biogases offer a renewable alternative that is already being used across multiple applications, including heating systems, industrial processes and road and marine transport.
To guarantee sustainability, biogases must be transparently defined through clear characteristics. Independent third-party certification bodies play a crucial role in validating the environmental integrity of biogas and biomethane production.
This certification provides the foundation for standardised, transparent and transferable trading of biomethane across Europe by detailing its energy and environmental attributes.
Despite the push for a unified internal European market, trading biogases remains complex. It largely depends on how individual EU Member states are connected to the European gas grid and structure their regulatory frameworks.
This Masterclass offers an in-depth exploration of both the opportunities and complexities involved in biomethane certification and trading.
The first part delves into the regulatory landscape and outlines the necessary steps to achieve proper certification. The second part focuses on the key components of biomethane trading, revealing how producers can benefit from both domestic and cross-border markets.
Programme
Morning: Biomethane and certification- Introduction to the certification process.
- Regulatory framework applicable to ISCC EU.
- Certification structure and responsibilities of the involved parties, including accreditation and certification bodies.
- Key elements of the value chain: farms, point of origin, collecting point, processing unit, trader, market.
- Principles of traceability and chain of custody.
- Sustainability documentation: self-Declarations, Sustainability Declarations and Proofs of Sustainability.
- Biogas, biomethane and BioLNG supply chain.
- Summary of the audit process.
- Fundamentals of GHG calculation.
- Heading into an integrated renewable gas market and EU RED III.
- The regulatory framework for trading biomethane.
- Current European Guarantee of Origin (GO) system, the role of issuing bodies and other means (e.g. ERGaR).
- Compatibility of biomethane trading within Europe (EU/CH/UK).
- Proof of Sustainability (PoS) and Guarantee of Origin: preventing double claims.
- Mass balance (ISCC EU PoS) vs. Book & Claim (GOs only) models.
- End-uses of biomethane: heating, transport and its role in the voluntary and compliance EU-ETS markets (I, II, maritime etc.).
- The ins and outs of cross border trading (Commercial route for biomethane; opportunities, barriers & risks; standardisation of trade; spot trading vs. long-term hedging; examples of successful biomethane commercialisation).
- Looking forward (Carbon steered systems under EU RED III - quality versus quantity; EU: Union Database and how will it influence trading; Tracking new and evolving upcoming markets).

Masterclass | The biogases market: certification and trade (13 October, 2025, Brussels)
As someone with over two decades in the energy sector and strong technical experience in biomethane, I found this masterclass on biogases certification and trade truly enlightening. It opened up a whole new perspective on market mechanisms, policy frameworks, and certification systems that complement the technical side of biomethane. A valuable and insightful learning experience for anyone keen to understand the evolving renewable gas market.Ajay Kumar Sutrakar, Manager Biomethane Development Office, Technological University of the Shannon
Masterclass | The biogases market: certification and trade (13 October, 2025, Brussels)
The ERGTC masterclass offered exceptionally clear, practical insight into the rapidly evolving biogases market. The discussion on certification and cross-border trade was particularly valuable, blending policy, market mechanisms, and real-world application. A highly engaging and relevant session for anyone working in the biomethane ecosystem.”Andronika Kirov, Head of Marketing, Communication & Sustainability, Biogest
